Ramble:
The older I get and the more I learn about life, the more I appreciate my grandmother. I was always very close to her. I lived down the street just a little bit from my paternal grandparents and they helped to take care of us a lot when we were little. She passed away when I was 14 – plenty of time to become a major influence -it was the hardest thing I had ever dealt with at that time and still ranks way up there. I swear she has visited me in my dreams before – when I was really having hard times. These were very clear, realistic dreams that differ from regular dreams… unforgettable. Sometimes I swear she’s with me still. I appreciate the company! From my memories of her she was always very positive. She lived through the Depression, raised & nurtured 2 boys with disabilities (at a time when many people would have institutionalized them), bootlegged unpasteurized milk, went back to school in her 40s… she was happy with what she had and made the best of it. When their land got bought up by the government to flood for a reservoir they picked up & moved to the other side of the mountain and dug in there. They had a little home they built on a good chunk of land and she kept it immaculate. I’m not trying to idealize the time or make it out that she lived back in the good ole days and that it was a simpler time. It wasn’t really – I mean that it’s all relative. I think it is a virtue to live simplistically. Like in art, a simplistic piece is not simple. It takes a lot of work to achieve a simple look. It takes a lot of strength, commitment and courage to be kind, to put others ahead of oneself, to live a right life. And to shut up and be humble about it. To live and let live happily ever-after.
